Birding in the Big Thicket

2007

The Kountze Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the volunteers and participants who made this year's BIRDING IN THE BIG THICKET such a huge success!!

The day kicked off at the Kountze Middle School cafeteria at 8:00am with exciting children's activities followed by a chartered bus trip to Winnie's Safari Park where everyone enjoyed lunch. We then traveled to High Island, "a legend in birding", where our guide from the Houston Audubon Society led us through the majesty of the Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary.

The children greatly enjoyed the Safari Park playground!

The platforms at the Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary are a great place from which to view the birds undisturbed.

Even the children loved viewing the multitude of birds through binoculars provided by the Chamber.

Check out the alligator at the bottom left sunning himself as he waits for his next meal to come within reach!

Take a closer look at some of the birds found on the islands in Smith Oaks Bird Sanctuary.

Houston Audubon Society guide Winnie Burkett discusses the flora found in the Sanctuary with Kountze High School Science teacher Laurie Overstreet while part of the group looks on.
